shaking the laziness

I didn't get as much time to work on my book last week. For those of you who may have not known, I was laid off from my full time job in October. So I work part-time doing graphic design from home, as well as working part-time on the weekends bartending. Last week I found myself with a bit of design work as well as running around getting prepared for a chili contest which took about 2 days. I did a little work on the book, although not as much as could have. It's hard to shake the laziness of the past few months.

I probably have about 20 mostly nonsequential pages thumbed out. I've found that I'm getting a barebones scene thumbed out and then I want to immediately go back and flesh it out. I also have found that there are entire ideas I want to scrap and redo. It's hard to resist the urge to rework what I already have but right now I need to just try and focus on getting ideas out of my head.

Btw, While I missed top 5 and therefore any prizes in the Chili contest, I did end up placing in 7th out of 25-28 contestants.

I read somewhere if you have the goal of writing a book, you should actually tell people your writing a book. Because telling people somehow makes your project more real.

I'm writing a Graphic novel.

Yes this was my New Year's Resolution. In fact it's been my life's resolution, because since I was 24, I've told myself I'd be working on a graphic novel by the time I was 30. And like every good resolution I've put it off.

Anyways, I've been noodling with something.
Essentially the idea is about a musician/band who travels around to gigs with a piano. The idea came after an interview I read w/ Ben Folds about his early days of touring and how he once had to sleep on his piano. I found the logistics of trying to move a piano around from place to place on a regular basis interesting. I haven't decided on the type of piano. I was originally thinking a an upright, but that seems like it would actually be a reasonable piano to move, so now I'm think maybe something like a baby grand is potentially more interesting.

I've yet solidify a plot but I've got an idea and it's compelling enough for me to see what I can do with it. I've mostly just been thumbnailing some scenes into a sketchbook. I haven't really organized anything yet. I'm really just hoping to get my ideas out, which really has been my biggest problem with writing.

I plan spending at least an hour a day working towards my goal for as long as it takes, and I'll keep you all posted on at least a weekly basis.

Just turned 30 on Monday. After the initial day of mourning, I've felt the need to reminisce. Tonight, I decide to visit Talkaboutcomics.com. I used to spend so much time on that board.

Hell looking at my profile it says I was still working in a coffee shop which was about 2002. I was still in college then, getting paid 6 bucks an hour slinging coffee, surviving off of pilfered junk food and subway, smoking heavily, living in the corner of a dank loft space and was depressingly single.

It's hard to picture myself back then skinny, smelly, socially awkward, wearing a top hat, drinking heavily, desperately trying to act the part of the artist.

I don't know, in a way I miss it, but I don't. I liked the "adventures" I'd get in back then, but overall I think I was a pretty unhappy person. And I much prefer being happy.

I thought I 'd finally post it, partially because I had another dream about my grandma's neighborhood this morning. This time "they" were digging up the park we used to go to and doing some sort of construction. I was snooping around taking pictures of everything trying to remember all the times I spent in that park. In particular I saw a giant fountain that was part of the park as a kid in my dream, but is not actually part of the park in real life. It's weird how my brain embellishes things beyond recognition but my consciousness still recognizes it.

Anyways, I don't really know whats up with these grandma dreams lately. The only thing I can think of is when going on a job interview a couple weeks ago. I followed some mapquest directions to an address in Milwaukee, while what I really needed was the same address only in South Milwaukee. Coincidentally the Milwaukee address landed me right near her old neighborhood, in fact I drove right past the park in my dream. though somehow I missed seeing the house she actually lived in
